Pajama Party

Pajama Party

Pajama Party is a female group that was put together by Peggy Sendars and Jim Klein, and originally made up of Daphne Rubin-Vega, Jennifer McQuilkin, and Suzi Ranta (with Jennifer on leads). It first released its 1988 Dance smash “Yo No Sé,” making the group the first female act to originally release a hit freestyle song titled entirely in the Spanish language. While working on their second single, after numerous performances and appearances, Jennifer and Suzi were replaced by Lynn Critelli and Amanda Homi. Their second single, “Over and Over” (originally performed by Brenda K. Starr), also became a major Dance hit in the clubs & radio. Soon, in 1989, Pajama Party released its first full-length album “Up All Night” on Atlantic Records. Around this time, Amanda was replaced by Club MTV dancer Marialisa Costanzo. The next single, 1990’s “Hide and Seek” (remixed by Robert Clivillés & David Cole) became an instant hit, and also became their first music video.

The debut album also contained the songs “Lovelight” as well as the ballad “Living Inside Your Love”. With their singles hitting Billboards Hot dance, touring & sharing the stage with the likes of New Kids on The Block, George Lamond, Sweet Sensation, Brenda K. Starr, Linear, and Sa-Fire to name a few, the girls quickly became an international hit.

In 1991 came the release of their second album Can’t Live Without It (also on Atlantic). The first single was the radio-friendly “Got My Eye on You”. The album’s title song would lean the girls more towards R&B and Pop. By 1992, the group parted ways, but still continued to be involved in the entertainment industry. Daphne becoming a successful solo Dance music artist (now with her Rock band DRV), also an actress starring in movies along with Robert DeNiro, Neve Campbell, and Kevin Bacon, as well as creating the leading role of ‘Mimi’ in the legendary Broadway musical “RENT”. Jennifer & Suzi are still involved with music, Amanda & Marialisa also went on to do some acting appearing in films with Susan Sarandon & Stephen Dorff, and Lynn performing with various Rock bands in the New York area, being formerly engaged to Tico Torres of Bon Jovi. In 2000, for a special celebration held in honor of Fever’s Sal Abbeteillo, a new version of Pajama Party graced the stage. Marialisa, along with new members Janine Mojica (a former backup singer for Lisette Melendez) and Johanna (formerly Freestyle artist Lil’ Johanna) took to performing some of the classics, as well as working on new material.
